What is a Baptism Immersion Font?
A baptism immersion font is a large, purpose-built basin deep enough to partially or fully submerge the person being baptised. Unlike a standard baptismal font used for pouring water over the head, an immersion font allows the child or adult to be lowered into the water.
Immersion fonts are found in select Catholic, Orthodox, and some Anglican churches across Australia. They are considered one of the oldest forms of baptism and hold deep symbolic meaning within many Christian traditions.
How Does It Differ From a Standard Font?
A traditional baptismal font holds a small amount of blessed water, which the priest or celebrant pours or sprinkles over the forehead. An immersion font requires significantly more water and a larger physical structure, often built into the floor or sanctuary of the church.
The experience is visually and spiritually distinct. The act of being lowered into and raised from the water is understood to represent death and resurrection, making the symbolism especially vivid.
What Happens During an Immersion Baptism?
The priest guides the child or adult into the font and immerses them one to three times while reciting the baptismal formula. For infants, the celebrant typically holds the baby securely and lowers them gently into the water.
Families are encouraged to bring a large, soft towel and a warm change of clothes. The white garment is then placed on the child immediately after the immersion.
Is Immersion Baptism Common in Australia?
Immersion baptism is less common than pouring but is practised in a number of parishes, particularly within Eastern Catholic and Orthodox communities. Some newer Catholic churches have also incorporated immersion fonts into their architecture.
