How to Choose the Best Room for In-Home Newborn Photography in Sydney

The room you choose for your newborn session can make a significant difference to the light, warmth and feel of your photos.

Why the Room Matters More Than You Think

When a photographer arrives for your newborn session, the first thing they will do is assess the light. The room you choose sets the tone for everything: the softness of the images, the warmth of the colours, and how settled your baby remains throughout.

In Sydney homes, light varies enormously depending on aspect, time of day and season. Knowing what to look for in a room helps you prepare with confidence.

Look for Soft, Indirect Natural Light

The ideal room has a large window that receives indirect light, meaning the sun does not stream directly through the glass and create harsh shadows. North or east-facing rooms tend to offer the most workable light for morning sessions in Sydney.

Sheer curtains are your best friend. They diffuse the light beautifully and create that soft, even glow that makes newborn portraits feel timeless and calm.

Avoid Rooms with Strong Colour Casts

Deeply coloured walls, dark timber floors and bold furnishings can cast a colour tint onto your baby's skin in photos. Neutral tones such as white, ivory, soft grey and warm beige reflect light evenly and keep the focus where it belongs.

If your home is full of rich colour, do not worry. A skilled photographer working in newborn photography in Sydney will know how to work with what you have and guide you toward the best spot on the day.

The Bedroom Is Often the Best Choice

Most families find the master bedroom works beautifully. It usually has a large bed for posed parent and baby portraits, enough floor space for a portable beanbag setup, and a window that offers good light.

Strip the bed back to simple white or neutral linen before the session. Remove clutter from bedside tables and clear the floor space around the window.

Keep the Room Warm

Newborns need to be kept warm, especially when they are unswaddled for posed shots. Before your photographer arrives, raise the room temperature to around 24 to 26 degrees Celsius.

Close doors to other rooms and turn off ceiling fans. A small portable heater near the beanbag area can help maintain warmth throughout the session without overheating the whole house.

Think About Access and Flow

Your photographer will arrive with a bag of props, wraps and equipment. Choose a room that is easy to access and has enough space to move around comfortably without feeling cramped.

A room that connects easily to a feeding or settling space is also helpful. Newborn sessions involve plenty of pauses for feeds and settling, so being able to step away and return quickly keeps the session flowing smoothly.

Tidy, But Do Not Over-Style

You do not need to transform your home into a styled studio. A clean, tidy room with simple linen, a few meaningful objects and good light is all that is needed.

Personal touches such as a knitted blanket from a grandparent or a small vase of flowers from the garden can add warmth without distracting from your baby.

What If You Are Not Sure

If you are uncertain which room will work best, take a few photos on your phone at different times of morning and share them with your photographer before the session. Most photographers are happy to advise you in advance so you feel fully prepared.

The more settled and confident you feel on the day, the more relaxed your baby will be.
