Why Swaddling Matters for Newborn Photography
A settled newborn makes for a smoother, more relaxed session. Swaddling helps your baby feel secure, reduces the startle reflex, and keeps tiny limbs gently contained so your photographer can focus on capturing natural, peaceful portraits.
For families planning newborn photography in Sydney, understanding how to swaddle well before the session begins can make a significant difference to the final images.
Choose the Right Wrap
Muslin wraps are ideal. They are breathable, lightweight, and have enough stretch to create a snug but comfortable hold. Avoid thick or bulky fabrics, as they can make positioning awkward and add unnecessary bulk to portraits.
Have two or three clean wraps ready on the day. Your photographer may use their own, but having yours available gives more options for colour and texture.
The Basic Swaddle Technique
Lay the wrap in a diamond shape on a flat surface. Fold the top corner down slightly, then place your baby face-up with their neck at the fold.
Bring one side across the body and tuck it firmly underneath. Fold the bottom up, then bring the remaining side across and tuck it in. The wrap should be snug around the arms and chest but leave room for the hips to sit naturally.
When to Swaddle Before the Session
Try swaddling your baby around fifteen to twenty minutes before your photographer arrives. This gives your newborn time to settle into the wrap and drift toward a drowsy or sleeping state.
If your baby is unsettled, a short feed followed by a gentle swaddle often works well. Do not worry if it takes a few tries — your photographer is experienced with newborns and will work patiently with your baby's rhythm.
What Your Photographer Will Do
Your photographer may re-wrap your baby during the session to achieve different looks or adjust positioning. Some poses work best with arms tucked in tightly, while others are more relaxed with hands near the face.
Trust the process. In-home newborn sessions are unhurried, and the goal is always your baby's comfort first.
Keep the Room Warm
Newborns lose body heat quickly, especially when partially unwrapped for certain poses. Keep the session room a little warmer than you normally would, around 24 to 26 degrees Celsius if possible.
Close windows and doors to avoid draughts. A small portable heater nearby can help, particularly during Sydney's cooler months.
Avoid Overwrapping Before Feeds
If your baby needs a feed during the session, unwrap them fully and allow them to feed comfortably before re-swaddling. Trying to feed a tightly swaddled baby can cause frustration and make settling harder afterward.
Your photographer will simply pause and wait. Feeds during a session are completely normal and often lead to a beautifully sleepy newborn shortly after.
Practice Makes It Easier
If swaddling is new to you, practise a few times in the days leading up to your session. A firm, confident wrap settles babies more quickly than a loose one. There are many simple video tutorials available online that walk through the technique step by step.
The more comfortable you feel with the process, the calmer your baby is likely to be when it counts.
