Sponsors for Infant Baptism
For infant baptism, the sponsor typically stands alongside the parents at the font, holds the baptismal candle, and makes the baptismal promises on behalf of the child. Their physical presence during the rite is an important part of the ceremony.

Sponsors for Adult Baptism

The sponsor attends sessions, answers questions from personal experience, and walks with the candidate at the Easter Vigil when baptism is conferred.
One or Two Sponsors
Most traditions allow for one or two sponsors. Where two are chosen, one must be male and one female. Only one sponsor is required for the rite to be valid.
If a second person is invited to participate without meeting the canonical requirements, they may attend as a Christian witness rather than a formal sponsor.
