What are Baptism Vows?

Baptism vows are the promises made during a baptism ceremony on behalf of the child being baptised. In most Christian traditions, parents and godparents speak these vows aloud, committing to raise the child in the faith.

The vows are a central and meaningful moment in the service. They mark the beginning of a lifelong spiritual journey and are witnessed by family, friends and the congregation.

What Do Baptism Vows Typically Include?

While the exact wording varies between denominations, baptism vows generally cover three areas. Parents and godparents are asked to renounce sin, affirm their belief in the Christian faith, and commit to nurturing the child's spiritual growth.

In a Catholic baptism, these are known as the Rite of Baptism promises. Anglican and other Protestant services follow a similar structure, though the language may differ slightly.

Who Speaks the Baptism Vows?

In infant baptisms, the parents and godparents speak on behalf of the child. The presiding priest or minister leads the vows as a series of questions, with the family responding together.

Some services also invite the congregation to reaffirm their own baptismal promises at this point, making it a shared moment for everyone present.

Vows in Believer's Baptism

In traditions that practise believer's baptism, such as Baptist churches, the individual being baptised speaks the vows themselves. This is because baptism is reserved for those old enough to make a personal declaration of faith.

The vows in these settings are often a public testimony, expressing the person's own commitment to follow Christ.

Preparing for the Vows

Most parishes and churches offer baptism preparation sessions where families can read through the vows in advance. This gives parents and godparents time to reflect on the meaning of what they are committing to.

Arriving familiar with the words helps the moment feel less rushed and more personal on the day.

Photographing the Baptism Vows

The vow exchange is one of the most quietly powerful moments in any baptism ceremony. Faces are attentive, the room is still, and the emotion is genuine.

At Tinyfoot, we photograph this moment with care, capturing the expressions of parents and godparents as they make their promises. These images often become some of the most treasured from the entire day.
