Godparents are chosen by the parents to serve as spiritual guardians for the child being baptised. Their role is both ceremonial and ongoing.
During the baptism ceremony
Godparents stand alongside the parents during the baptism, make declarations of faith on behalf of the child, and are named officially during the service. In Catholic baptisms, there are typically two godparents, one of each gender. Anglican and other Christian traditions vary.
Why godparent portraits matter
The relationship between a child and their godparents is lifelong. Photographs of the godparents holding the baby, standing at the font, or sharing a moment with the family become meaningful records of that bond. A good baptism photographer will ensure godparents are well documented throughout the day.
